TIERRA DE LUZ

(soprano, alto flute and percussion – 5:00)

Performers: Trio Lorca, SCSU faculty ensemble (Dr. Catherine Verilli and Dr. Melissa Krause, Dr. Terry Vermillion),

Tierra de luz is the portrayal of a deeply troubled young gypsy girl, Siguiriya, who faces overwhelming

feelings of social and self-loathing. She desperately wishes to be absolved of the sins she has committed

and the pain that accompanies them. Periodic text painting, as well as the unique blend and interplay of

the soprano, alto flute and percussion, complement the symbolism so vividly expressed in the poetry of

Federico García Lorca. Trio Lorca commissioned this work from me in 2004. It has been performed at

Carnegie Hall, Minnesota’s Perpich Center for the Arts, St. Luke’s Concert Series in Minneapolis, and at

the Great Lakes Chapter Conference of the College Music Society.
