(flute and piano – 8:30)
Performers: Dr. Melissa Krause and Ann Oleksowicz.
Meditation and Dance was composed when I was a graduate student at Florida State University, after
hearing the contemplative quality of Takeo Kudo’s music for shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute). The
faster sections include driving rhythms and intense interplay between flute and piano, and slower
sections demonstrate the meditative quality suggested by the title. This piece has been performed at
the Great Lakes Chapter Conference of the College Music Society, Florida State University New Music
Festival, and the Dvorak Museum in the Czech Republic. It was winner of a Victor Herbert/ASCAP award
and the 1994 Austin Peay State University Young Composer Competition.
